I confess I jumped the line
\nThe lady at the first class counter
\nchecked me in with a smile
\neven though I was flying coach<\/p>\n
I detest the long lines
\nat Broadway shows,
\ntrain stations and taxi ranks,
\nairport check-in counters,
\nTSA airport security,
\naircraft boarding by zones,
\nsupermarkets, movie theaters,
\nrock concerts, sports events,
\nbusy traffic intersections,
\ndoctors\u2019 waiting rooms,
\nvoting booths\u2026<\/p>\n
In fact, I actively avoid
\nanywhere I have to stand in line<\/p>\n
Yet I have been standing in line
\nall my life \u2014 right here
\nat my designated spot
\nnot just me \u2014 but everyone else<\/p>\n
Standing in the line ahead of me
\nare faceless people, unrecognized
\nuntil, every now and then
\na multi-hued flash
\nlike a firework rocket
\nblossoms in the night sky
\ncasting flickering panoramas
\nof the hopes, dreams and achievements
\nof a familiar life<\/p>\n
And in those moments
\nI have recognized my father,
\nmy mother, my brother
\nI saw Maureen, Josephine
\nJimmy and Phong Yuan<\/p>\n
When I reach the head of the line
\nwill my life shine as brightly?<\/p>\n
Yet in this line
\nI’m in no hurry
